Beyond the Surface: Navigating Resistance in Guiding Clients

Beyond the Surface: Navigating Resistance in Guiding Clients

As a guide, my work often extends far beyond the immediate insights I receive. It involves a deep understanding of human psychology, empathy, and the strategic application of guidance—especially when a client's past experiences create resistance to their true path. This story illustrates the intricate dance of working with profound emotional blocks.

One such client came to me years ago for a reading. She was recently free from a marriage she had ended, feeling utterly justified in her decision. Her ex-husband's pursuit of his own creative passions during their union had, in her eyes, been a betrayal—a "how dare he?" moment that she cited as a primary reason for their divorce. This belief had solidified over years, making her feel righteous in her choice to end the relationship.

Now, she stood at a beautiful and pivotal point in her own journey, even if she couldn't fully see it at the time. Her soul was clearly encouraging her to embrace her creativity—not just as a passion, but as a potential source of income. This insight came to me with striking clarity before she even shared her creative works or what she was contemplating.

The profound irony was immediately apparent: her own spirit was guiding her to take the very step she had spent years condemning in someone else. How could I help her see that what she once believed was a betrayal was now the path her own soul was urging her to take?

I knew that directly sharing this observation could feel harsh or even judgmental, especially given her lingering pain and resentment. My role wasn’t to force the truth upon her, but to guide her gently toward her own understanding. So, I recommended a book that I often suggest to clients—one that I felt would help her come to this realization on her own, in a way that was kinder and less confrontational than what I might say during a session.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t what she wanted to hear. She left the reading angry and dissatisfied, feeling I hadn’t given her the clarity she sought. Later, she even emailed me, still expressing frustration.

I don’t know what happened to her after that. But I do know this: sometimes, the most compassionate thing we can do is hold space for someone’s growth without overstepping. Her journey wasn’t about me handing her the answers, but about her discovering them for herself.

In reflecting on this experience, I see the many roles I play in my work: a guide, a mirror, and sometimes a target for misplaced frustration. It’s not always easy, but I trust that the seeds planted during that session might one day grow into the clarity and understanding she needs.

What This Reveals About My Work:

  • Strategic Empathy: My approach involves not just identifying insights, but strategically delivering them in a way that respects a client's emotional state and capacity for reception, especially when deep-seated beliefs are involved.

  • Long-Term Vision: I understand that true transformation is a process, and sometimes the most impactful guidance involves planting seeds that blossom over time, rather than demanding immediate acceptance.

  • Resilience and Professionalism: This experience showcases the ability to remain centered and professional even when facing client frustration, trusting in the process of their individual journey.

A Question for Your Own Reflection:

Consider a challenging situation in your life. What core belief, perhaps one you've held for a long time, might be unconsciously shaping your perspective and potentially preventing progress?
